John,
On behalf of Ronin, Harri, Vihaan, and my whole class of middle-schoolers, I want to thank you so much for generously sharing with us your zip tie dome plans. It was so much fun to make and we can’t wait to bring it indoors next year, add a door and some covering, and turn it into a reading nook.
Below is a final shot of the build as well as some process shots!
Sam
Hello Zip Tie Domes,
My name is Sam and I am a middle school teacher who works at a student-led, project-based learning school in California. All of my students are 10-13 years old. To end the year, my class has been exploring the theme of “Shelter” and each kid has declared a different project that responds to the theme in some way. I have a student creating an animation based on an island survival story, a team creating a role playing game based on ancient civilizations, a team building a motorized earthquake shake table, and a final team attempting a 2v geodesic dome!
My dome students have researched materials and different building methods and have found your zip tie videos to be hugely inspiring. We have a wood shop at our school so they have started to make their own versions of the hubs based on the designs they saw on your video. They have about 4 weeks to fabricate the pieces and construct it. Looking at your website, I discovered that your design is patented and want us to contact you and let you know that we’re attempting to build our own. I think this is a good opportunity to teach them about how patents work. As much as I’d love to support your business and buy a “Hubs Only” kit, we’ve already fundraised and purchased materials for our own hubs. Would there be any way that we could discuss obtaining a limited license in exchange for a photo of the project?
Let us know,
Sam (along with Harri, Ronin, and Vihaan)
