About our Patented Geodesic Dome Connectors

Our Geodesic Dome Hub has been patented in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.
Other International Patents are in progress.

Our Geodesic Dome Hub design is much stronger than other hubs, due to the locking action in the outer collar that surrounds the center ring hub.

The outer collar supports the hub by moving the fulcrum away from the hub and onto the strut itself, which makes it impossible for the strut to shear away from the center ring hub.

But the real strength of the design is in the size of the holes in the outer collar as compared to the diameter of the struts.

For the curvature of the smaller 2v domes, the struts will need to move up to 18 degrees from the radial plane of the hub before the outer collar provides a locking action.

For the 2v domes, the holes in the outer collar surrounding each hub are drilled to the correct size to lock the struts at exactly 18 degrees.

For the larger 3v domes, the curvature of the dome is more gradual than the 2v domes, and the struts will only need to move 12 degrees from the radial plane of the hub before they are locked by the outer collar.

For the 3v domes, the holes in the outer collar are slightly smaller than the 2v dome. The smaller hole gives a tighter fit around the struts, so that the struts can only move up to 12 degrees before they lock into place.

The sizes of the holes in the outer collar are designed to lock the struts at the correct angles, which supports the struts and makes this geodesic dome connection much stronger than other designs.

Geodesic Dome Strength Using Our Connectors

The outer "Locking Collar" that surrounds the center ring hub is the reason our Dome Hub design can handle much more weight than other types of geodesic dome hubs.

Using only 120 lb Nylon Zip Ties, each of the Standard 4" Geodesic Dome Connectors can support more than 200 lbs in weight. The strength of the dome is limited only by the stiffness of the PVC struts, and not the hubs.

For building the larger 3v domes and the Heavy Duty Shelter Domes, we provide 250 lb. Stainless Steel Zip Ties.

The Heavy Duty Shelter Domes can support over 300 lbs from a single hub.

Our Dome Hub design can work with EMT conduit, metal pipe, and even metal rebar for building concrete domes.

The Idea Behind the Patent

The Patented "Locking Collar" works by moving the fulcrum away from the center ring hub and onto the collar, where the aperture size in the outer collar "locks" the strut at the correct angle. This makes the dome much stronger than a conventional hub.

The Locking Collar makes it impossible for the strut to shear off from the hub, as the Locking Collar keeps the struts from moving beyond the angle needed to support the dome.

The Locking Collar can be made in various shapes, and is the only design on the market that can utilize metal rebar struts for building concrete domes.

Our Locking Collar is a Universal Connector that can work as an addition to any other type of Geodesic Dome Hub to provide added strength.

The strength of the Locking Collar design allows us to use the most simple type of hub possible, such as a center ring with the struts connected together by zip ties. This type of hub would not be strong enough to build a geodesic dome without the Locking Collar.
